The Freedom Foundation hit yet another incredible milestone this week. In the six years since the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Janus vs. AFSCME, the organization has helped more than 200,000 public employees nationwide part company with their union.
The total cost to unions of these mass defections now exceeds a staggering $559 million — money that has been kept in the pockets of the hard-working Americans who earned it.
Now more than ever, the mission and success of the Freedom Foundation speaks for itself. People are tired of their hard-earned money being used to bankroll radical agendas and fund corrupt union leaders. Consequently, when they find out they have the right to opt-out, they exercise it — often bringing co-workers with them.
Unions deduct anywhere from $800 to $1,500 annually from their members, claiming these dues dollars will help advocate for change, bargain for fair pay or treatment and support causes that will help members.
But the lie has never been so bold-faced, and more than 200,000 workers agree emphatically. It’s time to expose these institutions.
In the past year, the deplorable actions of unions and how they choose to spend their funds have been laid bare. After the recent presidential election, it was discovered that teachers unions alone spent millions of their members’ dollars on politics and their preferred candidates, both at state and federal levels.
And they have nothing to show for it.
There have also been numerous cases involving compelled speech, forgery, anti-Semitism and DEI-focused agendas within unions, just to name a few.
This year, states like California, Ohio, Washington, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York have all seen record numbers of opt-outs and notable trend-setting cases that continue to pave the way for Freedom Foundation’s work.
California alone saw a record 16,013 opt-outs this year, a 31 percent increase over 2023, and Washington reported 6,136 opt outs, a staggering and record-setting 85 percent increase.
The direct result of this hard work and outreach is noticeable, tangible and great cause for celebration. We couldn’t do it without the generosity and enthusiasm of our supporters.
Today we commemorate this landmark number for the fight, and tomorrow we commit to pressing on and staying in the battle.
