After surveying its members, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters found that nearly 60 percent of dues-payers preferred a union endorsement of former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris.
This sent a clear message to Teamsters President Sean O’Brien, who acknowledged that his members lean “heavily towards former President Trump.”
Yet on September 18, O’Brien announced that his union would abstain from a presidential endorsement ahead of Election Day.
O’Brien’s disregard for the autonomy of his members is the same motivation that led the Teamsters to file suit against the Freedom Foundation in July for the high crime of contacting dues-payers about their constitutional right to cancel union membership.
The decisions of dues-paying members, not the self-serving interests of union bosses like O’Brien, must be at the forefront of union operations.
Otherwise, what use is there in paying union dues at all?
