The willingness of lawmakers to yield to WEA officials’ desire to dodge accountability has a silver lining for parents who want extra help for their children.
A portion of federal funds for districts will now be set aside for families to get tutoring or transportation to a different school. The Superintendent of Public Instruction’s office has provided me with how much money may be available in each district.

Most districts will also be required to send a letter informing families of these options. See the Dept. of Education recommended letter letter.
The Freedom Foundation championed parents’ ability to access federal funds for supplemental services in 2005 when we sent a letter to families in Tacoma telling them about this option. News Tribune wrote about this effort.
Federal meddling in education policy is annoying, and bureaucrats who wish to make states dance to their tune in exchange for permission to disobey the law are even more annoying.
In this case, however, the loss of the federal waiver restores families’ access to a small federal voucher for tutoring or transportation.
