Oklahoma City, OK – The Oklahoma State Senate today passed legislation that would revise the election schedule for all Oklahoma City school boards. Authored by Sen. Ally Seifried (R-Claremore) and supported by the Freedom Foundation, SB 6 passed overwhelmingly by a vote of 33-10.
The legislation moves school board races from April to November, aligning them with the general elections held for other state and local offices. The new schedule also standardizes primary elections to occur on the second Tuesday in September of odd-numbered years. This change is expected to increase voter turnout, enhance participation in school board elections, and save taxpayer money by regulating the local election cycle. SB 6 will foster stronger candidates who are focused on improving local schools rather than radical left teacher unions.
“This bill ensures that unions won’t be able to leverage small-turnout elections to appoint their activists. By streamlining school board elections, it also not only reduces taxpayer costs but also offers voters a clearer, more consistent process for engaging with their local school systems,” said Freedom Foundation CEO Aaron Withe.
The Freedom Foundation supports legislation like SB 6 that promotes the responsible use of taxpayer funds and strengthens the democratic process.
