Public employee unions enduring death by 1,000 emails

If you’ve been following the Freedom Foundation’s work for a while, you know our outreach efforts don’t just contact public employees one way. Over the course of a year, we have millions of contact points with public employees informing them of their First Amendment right to opt out of union membership and dues as affirmed in the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2018 Janus v. AFSCME ruling.

One way that we do this is through hundreds of thousands of monthly e-mails to the inboxes of public employees at their workplace and their homes. While we’ve seen great success with this strategy in the past, we’ve taken it to another level this year.

To date, we’ve helped 4,443 public employees part ways with their union by e-mail alone. Nearly one out of every 7.5 public employees this year has opted out due to our e-mail program. On top of this, we passed the opt-out total for our second-best year of e-mail opt outs in June of 2024.

The average cost of an e-mail opt-out is also much lower than our national average, sitting at just $8.17 per opt-out.

With just over two months left in the year, and e-mail being a highly effective method of reaching public employees, we expect to more than double the previous yearly record for e-mail optouts before the end of the year.

The Freedom Foundation continues to be the most effective organization in this fight. Through finding new and creative ways of reaching out to public employees, as well as refining the ways that already work, we’ve never been in a stronger position to reach our goals.
