Will Presidents’ Day get Cancelled?

With the woke left’s cancel culture, it is only a matter of time before Presidents’ Day is canceled. The left takes the position we can’t possibly celebrate people from the past that don’t measure up to our modern cultural standards, regardless of their accomplishments and great deeds.

This year, the Freedom Foundation may have given the left another reason to cancel the holiday.

During Presidents’ Day, several Freedom Foundation staff took advantage of state employees being home for door-to-door visits.   This allowed us to let state employees know they have the right to cancel their union membership.

We had great success in canvassing the homes of public employees in the Olympia area. We only spoke to one person who was happy with their union, while many more were grateful for the information and were interested in opting out. We even found some public employees who had already opted out thanks to the Freedom Foundation’s outreach efforts.

One woman I spoke to told me she was raised in a union household and believed unions were necessary for trade workers in dangerous jobs and workplaces where employers might try and financially take advantage of employees. She then told me that she had opted out years ago as she saw no value or need for unions in the public sector. She told me that in all the years she paid union dues and the years since, she has never been contacted or spoken to anyone from the union.

Well, regardless of what accomplishments and feats unions of the past may have accomplished, modern public-sector unions don’t measure up and can’t continue to survive on tails of old. As the old saying goes, what have you done for me lately? According to more and more public employees I speak to, the answer is a resounding “not much.”

Let’s hope we keep Presidents’ Day as a national holiday.   It gives us a great opportunity to share the Freedom Foundation’s message of freedom face-to-face with public employees enjoying their day off.
