On April 14, the Freedom Foundation sent emails and made phone calls to county and city employees in California who had never heard from us before.
While we’ve already reached out to hundreds of thousands of unionized public employees across California, the state is so massive there are still pockets of employees who still aren’t aware of their constitutional right to cease their financial obligation to their union under the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2018 ruling in Janus v. AFSCME.
We’re used to a positive first response, but these public employees were even more interested than most. In a single day, more than 70 public employees found financial freedom from their union.
This follows a trend. During the past week, more than 270 public employees in California have completed opt-out forms and sent them along to their union. At an average of $800 per year in union dues, these defections cost public employee unions more than $200,000 per year.
